we need more movies like Moxie, here’s why…

This movie is all about changing the norm, feminism and empowering women, what more could you want!?

Moxie is a 2021 Netflix film directed by Amy Poehler (my absolute fave!). The movie revolves around the central character, 16-year-old Vivian, who goes to high-school where sexism, misogyny, racism, bullying and discrimination are the norm.

When Vivian tries to speak seek help about these issues, she is shut down and told to not get involved. In an act of inspiration sparked by her mother, Vivian creates an anonymous magazine called Moxie, which she uses to help empower the girls at her school to speak out and take action.

The girls of the school band together to change the culture of their school and bring back their power.

This movie is funny and has some awesome actors, but my favourite thing about this movie is that it features realistic examples of normalised misogyny in school and on social media. They also help represent body types, cultures and ideologies which are not commonly seen in films.

We see to much representation of things that are unrealistic or don’t relate to most 21st-century girls. This includes using actors who are too old to represent the age, gender, ideas or views of their character.

How can an audience gain an understanding of the message of a film if it in no way correlates to the viewer themsleves, despite being targeted to them?

That is why I think that movies like this are super important. I love that feeling after seeing a movie that is empowering and inspirational, it’s something truly amazing!

Next time you wanna watch something funny, encouraging and just plain realistic, check out this one!

Let me know if you’ve seen this one in the comments,

  1. Hi Jorja! I watched this movie with headphones on in my college dorm room and I’m sure my roommate was equal parts concerned and amused by the reactions it caused. They ranged from angry cat like hissing to random exclamations in French denouncing the male jerks to fangirling about the one supportive male character (who also makes a fantastic onscreen boyfriend). Such a great movie and made me want to take on the world! 😸
